Moving to Owensboro is a little different from moving to a big city. You are not going to lose an hour in traffic, but you are also never stuck for something to do. Owensboro sits right on the Ohio River, downtown got a serious facelift over the last decade, and it takes about 40 minutes to reach Evansville when you want a bigger-city night out. Once you settle in, here is where locals actually spend their time.

Spend an evening on the riverfront

Smothers Park runs along the water in the middle of downtown, and it is the spot half the town seems to end up on a nice night. There are fountains that kids run through all summer, a big playground, and porch swings that look out over the river. It is free. Right next to it, English Park stretches along the water with a walking and biking path if you want to move a little.

In the warmer months, downtown puts on Friday After 5, a free concert series on the riverfront that runs most Friday nights from spring into early fall. Bring a chair, grab food from a vendor, and listen to live music with the river behind the stage.

Eat like you mean it

Owensboro calls itself the Bar-B-Q Capital of the World, and the local specialty is mutton, which you will not find many other places. Moonlite Bar-B-Q Inn is the big name, known for its buffet and its burgoo, a thick stew that is an Owensboro tradition. Old Hickory Bar-B-Que has been run by the same family since 1918 and is one of the oldest barbecue restaurants in the country. Try both and pick a side, because locals have opinions about this. Every May the International Bar-B-Q Festival takes over downtown, and the whole place smells like smoke for a weekend.

Get into the bluegrass

The Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and Museum sits downtown by the river, and it is worth a stop even if you have never thought much about bluegrass. There are instruments, history, and live music inside. Every summer the museum puts on ROMP, a bluegrass festival at Yellow Creek Park that pulls in fans from around the country and turns into a few days of camping and music.

Get outside

For a smaller city, Owensboro has a lot of green space. Ben Hawes Park has wooded trails and disc golf on the west side of town. Yellow Creek Park has ball fields, trails, and open space, and it is where ROMP sets up each summer. Panther Creek Park is a local favorite for a walk or a picnic. The Western Kentucky Botanical Garden has themed gardens and events through the year, and it is an easy way to spend a Saturday morning.

Catch a show or a museum

RiverPark Center is right on the river downtown and hosts concerts, touring Broadway shows, the Owensboro Symphony, and community theater through the year. A couple of blocks away you have the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art and the Owensboro Museum of Science and History, which is a good rainy-day stop with kids. Downtown has also filled back in with local restaurants, coffee shops, and bars, so there is somewhere to go after the show.

Find your neighborhood

Part of the fun of a new town is figuring out where you fit. Owensboro has quiet older neighborhoods near downtown, newer subdivisions on the east and south sides, and room to spread out once you get into Daviess County. Where you land comes down to your commute, whether you want sidewalks or a little acreage, and which schools you are after. That is the part I can help with.
